Barton Manor Partners with Nurture UK
Posted on: 12/07/2024As communicated at the start of the academic year, Barton Manor School have partnered with Nurture UK and are working to become a recognised National Nurturing School. Nurture UK is an organisation dedicated to supporting the emotional wellbeing and academic success of children and young people through nurturing practices. Their principles are based on the understanding that children's social, emotional, and behavioural needs must be met for effective learning and development. Here are the key principles:
Children’s Learning is Understood Developmentally: Recognises that children develop at different rates and emphasizes the need to cater to individual developmental stages.
The Classroom Offers a Safe Base: Ensures that the classroom environment is predictable, consistent, and secure, fostering a sense of safety and belonging.
Nurture is Important for the Development of Wellbeing: Highlights the importance of nurturing relationships and positive interactions in supporting children's emotional and social wellbeing.
Language is a Vital Means of Communication: Emphasises the role of language in expressing needs and emotions, developing thinking, and building relationships.
All Behaviour is Communication: Understands that children’s behaviour is a form of communication and reflects their feelings, experiences, and unmet needs.
The Importance of Transition in Children’s Lives: Focuses on providing support during changes and transitions in children’s lives, recognising the potential impact on their emotional and psychological state.
These principles aim to create an environment that supports all aspects of a child's development, ensuring that they feel valued and understood, which in turn fosters better learning and personal growth. During Term 5, selected students, staff and parents were asked to participate in independent research, whereby they completed podcasts and activities to explore how the principles have been embedded in our school community. These findings will be available at the start of the next academic year. Our application to be an accredited Nurture School will be submitted at the end of the academic year and the principles of the programme will continue to be an integral part of our planning for the future.
