Key Stage 3 Science Reading Week
Posted on: 06/11/2026During the final week of Term 1, students at Barton Manor School immersed themselves in a range of exciting scientific reading activities as part of our Key Stage 3 Science Reading Week.
Our Year 7 students spent the week reading The Bacteria Book, a fascinating introduction to the world of microorganisms. Through their lessons, students explored how bacteria and other microbes affect our lives, discovering both their benefits and their potential dangers. The activities highlighted the importance of reading and literacy within science, demonstrating how scientists use texts to communicate ideas, share discoveries and deepen understanding of the natural world.
Meanwhile, Year 8 students took on the role of scientific researchers by exploring a selection of scientific journals and articles. They investigated a variety of thought-provoking topics, including whether life could exist on Mars, the science and ethics of de-extinction, whether voles are shrinking in response to environmental pressures, and how robotic arms can be controlled using signals from the human brain.
The week provided students with a valuable opportunity to engage with scientific ideas that go beyond the National Curriculum. By reading, discussing and evaluating contemporary scientific research, students developed their scientific curiosity and asked meaningful questions about the world around them. The activities also helped to strengthen key literacy and oracy skills, encouraging students to read critically, communicate their ideas effectively and engage in thoughtful scientific discussion.
